You’re at the sink again. Toothbrush ready. Your toddler? Mouth clamped shut like a vault. Sound familiar? You’re not alone - almost every parent hits this standoff. The trick isn’t to push harder. Tiny teeth and new gums are super sensitive, so a gentler approach works best.

Try brushing together. Toddlers love to copy you, so hand them their own brush while you use another. Aim the bristles toward the inside of their cheek - that spot has fewer taste buds and feels less weird. Let them pick a toothbrush with their favorite character, and for under-threes, just use a rice-sized bit of toothpaste.

If they’re still squirming, have them lie back with their head in your lap - it gives you control without the struggle. And if mint is a dealbreaker, ask your pharmacist about fruity flavors. Strawberry toothpaste can work magic!
