Your toddler climbs out of bed 10 times every night. Bedtime stretches to two hours of frustration.
Sleep experts explain that toddlers test boundaries at bedtime because they have the physical ability to leave their beds but lack the self-regulation to stay put.
Create boundaries that work:
Use a toddler clock that shows when it's time to stay in bed
Walk your child back to bed silently without interaction
Put a baby gate in the doorway if needed for safety
Stay consistent with your response every single time
Pediatric sleep experts recommend the "silent return" method. Walk your child back to bed without talking, making eye contact, or showing emotion. Repeat as many times as needed.
Some parents find success with a bedtime pass system. Give your toddler one pass per night to leave their room for water or a hug. After they use it, no more exits allowed.
